Abstract

The Peter and Donna Thomas Hand Papermaking Collection at the University of Iowa contains a variety of books, ephemera and examples of handmade paper, mostly from the 20th and early 21st centuries. These items document the history, materials, machinery and techniques, as well as the artists that helped shape the world of hand papermaking in the 1970s-2000s. This collection is rich with rare or unique books on the subject of hand papermaking, impossible to find ephemera, and paper swap collections, as well as other papermaking/paper related items discovered in the course of the Thomas’ scholarly work researching various aspects of the craft and its history.

The books in the Thomas Collection are held in the Special Collections Library at the University of Iowa and can be located using the InfoHawk catalog, which can be accessed here.

Since the books in their collection have now been merged with all the other books in the Special Collections Library, this “finding guide” will help the scholar or interested papermaker recognize the books.

The ephemera and paper samples in the collection are held in ArchivesSpace and can located hereThese items are described under the heading “collection organization” on the left-hand side of the ArchiveSpace collection page.

I. Introduction to the collection by Sidney Berger

This collection includes a wide variety of materials concerning paper: its manufacture, mostly by hand, its manifestations, and its varieties.

For more than fifty years the Thomases have been actively involved in the world of paper, as papermakers, book artists, authors, collectors, publishers and lecturers. They are known throughout the world for the imaginative, beautifully crafted, informative books they have produced, first under the imprint Good Book Press, and then under the imprint Peter and Donna Thomas. As prominent artists and bookmakers, as practitioners actively participating in many conferences, symposia, exhibitions and other scholarly and craft endeavors, and as active scholars in the field of papermaking and paper history, they have amassed a significant collection of books, pamphlets, cards, sheets, broadsides, sample books and other materials on a wide range of topics with the field. The scope and quality of the items in this collection are remarkable, showing their understanding of the field, especially with respect to what kinds of things will be important to scholars of paper history. A collection like this could have been amassed by only a few people. The Thomas’s intimate participation in the world of papermaking brought them in contact with scores of important scholars, papermakers, booksellers, librarians, archivists, artists, and collectors. Only this kind of contact, matched with their acumen and insight, would yield a collection as rich and varied as the one presented here.

II. General description of the collection

The artist will find beautiful books printed on handmade paper, and inspiring examples of handmade paper. The historian will find books and other materials that document the revival of the craft of hand papermaking in the 60-70s (after production hand papermills that had existed for centuries were no longer viable economic enterprises and most had ceased operations). The hand papermaker will find books with technical information on how to make paper by hand, books that document other hand papermaker’s various niche interests in the craft, samples of paper made for keepsake and swatch exchanges, and one-of-a-kind items like a folded quire of unprinted handmade paper from the 19th century, a collection of vintage watermarked paper (composed of end pages removed by a binder from antiquarian books he was preparing), and an assortment of beater log and record books (1900-1970) from the Milbourne's Tuckenhay Mill in Devon, England.

The collection first began as the Thomas' searched to find books about hand papermaking that had been written and printed by a hand papermaker on their own handmade paper. They found so few of those books that they broadened their focus to include books about hand papermaking printed on handmade paper that were not written or printed by the papermaker, and books papermakers had printed on their own paper that were not about papermaking. Their collection later grew to contain general books about hand papermaking; examples of historical and contemporary handmade paper - both as individual sheets and bound blank books; collections of handmade paper samples from paper exchanges and conference keepsake packets; and printed ephemera related to hand papermaking.

3.

Books not about papermaking that were printed by papermakers on their handmade paper or with samples of their handmade paper.

These books were of interest to me for various different reasons. Often because of the unique qualities of the paper, but perhaps even more often in admiration of the sheer tenacity of the individual to make the paper, print and bind the book.

Prioritized list of books Peter Thomas suggests to look at first:

3/7, Douglass Howell’s only printed book on his own paper

3/8, 3/9, Dard Hunter’s first two books printed on his own paper

3/12, Claire Van Vliet collaboration with Twinrocker’s Kathy Clark. To my best knowledge this was the first fine press artists’ book to be illustrated with pulp paintings.

Tuckenhay Paper Mill, Milbourne Record Books

The most important items in ArchiveSpace are the record books from the Milbourne Mill, Tuckenhay, Devon, England

These books were collected as a result of our trips to Tuckenhay, in Devon, England, to meet with retired workers from the Tuckenhay Mill as we were trying to understand and document the “shake” of the papermaker who worked the vat. We documented that research in a book: Tuckenhay Mill: People and Pape (The deluxe edition held in the UI Library collection has an additional portfolio of paper with trial animal watermarks. We also documented the shake in a video recording titled: “The Ergonomics of Hand Papermaking” which can be accessed in the collection, or on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i16V_hFPQfQ
